Capitol Park Museum Celebrates Juneteenth

Also known as Freedom day, Juneteenth is a celebration of the emancipation of those who have been enslaved in the United States. Capitol Park Museum in partnership with the Baton Rouge African American Museum will host live music, poetry, with keynote speaker Raymond Jetson of Metromorphosis. This Friday evening event will be a “kick off” for the weekend programming that is taking place throughout Baton Rouge. https://www.braamuseum.org/events

Celebrate Juneteenth with the Capital Park Museum by creating a meaningful blackbird collage. Participants will be read the book, Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan, a colorfully illustrated book with a beautiful message about appreciation for one’s heritage and history. The young artists will not only leave with an artistic representation of history and culture but will understand they should be proud of who they are. The purpose of this program is to give richer experience for young people to enjoy museums and cultural spaces and build their appreciation for Louisiana’s unique culture and history by immersive learning.

     *   About JCA: Junior Cultural Ambassador’s Program is a venture of the Friends of the Capitol Park Museum The program takes place once a month on a Saturday from 10:30 AM-12 PM. We announce the age ranges for the activity when informing the members about that month’s program.

We have three tracks, yet all of the programs and projects overlap. Art – this track covers innovation, visual and performing arts, science, in addition to craft-based learning initiatives. History – learning about an aspect of Louisiana history and how it builds our culture. Epicurean – this track looks at agriculture, food, and nutrition, understanding our unique culture through consumption and the history of the ingredients, customs, and dishes. Each month’s program accompanies a curated tour of the museum that reinforces the overarching theme of the monthly activity. We are creating an educational program that teaches children how to learn, gain richer experiences with museums and cultural spaces, and build their love for Louisiana’s unique culture.

Youth, A Junior Cultural Ambassador membership is included for each qualifying if a family purchases a “household membership level” or above child. To buy a JCA membership as a gift is $25 annually per child.
